the Idea's origin

I was around 12 years old when I first entered a synagogue. It was a strange experience in the dilapidated and imposing temple: men in hats swaying back and forth – with a handkerchief on my head, I felt totally out of place. And then the cantor started to sing in Hebrew, in a very foreign melody. Those strange songs deeply touched me, and I felt as though I’d always known them.

Music penetrates the heart and reaches the soul, easier than anything else.

There are so many films on Jewish subjects that I never wanted to touch it. But because this one is so different, I feel a strong call for it. Besides being fun, featuring extraordinary music, and questioning notions about Jewishness, The Wandering Muse looks at a rarely talked-about Jewish archetype – the wandering artist.

THE WANDERING MUSE will be informative, fun and filled with musical and visual delight. By posing a simple question and offering a surprising range of answers, the film will widen the perspective of its audience and so fight racism – on all sides.

Wondering Muse

The "Wandering" Muse comes from the myth of the Wandering "Jew", who is a classic antisemitic stereotype.

Wondering Muse

The Wandering Jew is a character from a medieval Christian legend. The character, I presume, comes from the fact that Jews have been wandering (and wondering) for millenia before. The legend has had a lot of versions with various interpretations of this character. Many are antisemitic, while others portrays him as the undying Jew in search for truth.
There're a number of reasons for our title. The wandering is a common element of all Jews for a loong long time, and still going far and wide. And the Wandering Muse connects them all.
