As the granddaughter of renowned classical Persian singer, Yona Darshasti and the daughter of cantor Farid Dardashti, Galeet Dardashti is the first woman in her family to continue this Jewish and Persian musical tradition. Determined to bring Persian Jewish musical traditions to the mainstream, Galeet Dardashti performs, lectures and organizes workshops to entertain and educate.
Drawing inspiration from the Middle Eastern musical and cultural soundscapes, Galeet binds multi-lingual texts from the Torah, the Bible, the Talmud and the Midrash in her current project called “The Naming”.
Currently based in New York, Galeet is also the leader of the all-female Mizrahi group, Divahn – a traditional Middle Eastern Jewish music group that mixes Indian and Latin percussion and lush string arrangements with Galeet’s haunting vocal stylings in Hebrew, Arabic, Aramaic and Judeo-Spanish.
