Michael Alpert
“I come from a Lubovitch family... My aunts made gefilte-fish from the fish we caught.”
Singer, musician, scholar, producer, educator and Yiddishist, Michael Alpert is a pioneering figure of the klezmer music for over 25 years. Also known for his performances and recordings with Brave Old World, Khevrisa, Kapelye and David Krakauer, Alpert is the link between Old World Jewish musicians and the klezmer ‘revival’.
Raised in a Yiddish-speaking home, Alpert is considered one of the best traditional Yiddish singers of his generation as well as a noted teacher of Yiddish folkdances.
Currently residing in New York, Alpert continues to teach and perform at klezmer festivals around the world while conducting his own extensive research on traditional Jewish music and dance throughout North America and Europe.
