Ukrainian musician, DJ, producer and radio broadcaster Yuriy Gurzhy is best known as one of the creators and organizers of the legendary dance event, Russendisko.
After immigrating to Berlin in the 1990s, Gurzhy and well-known German author and journalist Wladimir Kaminer, burst onto Berlin nightclub scene with their first Russendisko in 1999. Initially started as a simple party, the Russendisko quickly became an international success. By combining Russian songs with heavy bass beats, ska played on the accordion, grunge music and reggae riffs, Gurzhy and Kaminer’s Russendisko creates a musical experience that is familiar, yet exotic.
In 2003, Gurzhy and Hungarian musician and DJ of the Hungaro Groovers Soundsystems, Simon Wahorn, formed RotFront. An eclectic blend of reggae, klezmer, hip-hop, cumbia and punk, RotFront’s “emigrantski raggamuffin” music, discusses everyday life and the immigrant experience in Berlin.
